When People with Type 2 Diabetes Need Insulin?

The use of insulin is usually required by people with type 1 diabetes. But people with type 2 diabetes also need insulin. When insulin is needed?

"There is no simple way to know when a patient with type 2 diabetes require insulin as the best treatment, but there is a guideline," said Dr. Richard Hellman, endocrinologists who is also former president of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, as quoted from MSN.Health, Thursday (11/17/2011).

Dr. Hellman said that in general if a patient has a hemoglobin A1C levels higher than those who use insulin, it is advisable to use insulin therapy in the treatment.

American Diabetes Association recommends a hemoglobin A1C value should be 7 percent or less, while the American College of Endocrinology and the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists recommended value is 6.5 percent or less.

"In addition, if you can not lower A1C levels through diet, exercise or other drugs, then you may need insulin to lower it," said Dr. Hellman.

However, the use of insulin is usually not recommended if the person is not able to manage something well, have limitations in vision and dexterity, and no support from family.(

This is because the purpose of the use of insulin is to mimic the natural performance of a healthy pancreas produces a hormone that is consistent as well as to overcome the blood sugar is too low.

Before using insulin, the doctor will discuss in advance with the patient regarding the schedule of insulin injections, as well as select the type of insulin that will be used.
