As weddings go, Kim Kardashian’s almost made Wills and Kate’s look like Kerry and Mark’s.
Kim wore not one but three couture Vera Wang gowns as she married basketball star Kris Humphries in an intimate ceremony for 450 of her nearest and dearest... oh, and four million viewers of the E! channel in America, and People magazine’s entire readership.
This was a day where the (50,000) flowers cost as much as the (20.5 carat) engagement ring – a highly reasonable $2million (£1.24million).
It netted Kim and Kris $18million (£11.9million) from media deals, TV coverage and various endorsements.
When the newlywed couple took to the dancefloor, they were serenaded by pop star Robin Thicke, singing the Al Green classic Let’s Stay Together.
Altogether now: 72 days later, Kim filed for divorce. Their marriage, which turned out to have a shorter shelf life than a loaf of bread, ended up making them a cool $250,000 (£155,000) a day.
All of a sudden TOWIE’s Lauren selling the story of her abortion seems like (no pun intended) child’s play. The shameless Reality TV stakes have well and truly been raised.

Today there is feverish gossip on both sides of the Pond, and all over the internet, about Kim and Kris’s divorce.

The rumours are so outlandish you’d dismiss them about anyone else, seem to be not far-fetched enough.
They range from Kris not wanting to start a family, to the whole relationship being a sham from the start with Kim desperate to capitalise on her fame with a wedding, and not letting the fact she didn’t have a boyfriend stand in her way.
There are whispers that Kris was selected for her – not least because his name started with a K like the rest of the family... perfect branding! – and that it was an arranged marriage with Kim having no feelings for Kris at all.
If Kim’s abducted by aliens later this week, who then reveal they are her long-lost sisters, it will basically feel like par for the course.
Kim Kardashian became US tabloid fodder in 2006, when she began appearing – very much in the background – on red carpets with BFF Paris Hilton.
Possibly inspired by her friend’s morally admirable rise to fame, Kim made a sex tape which – GASP! – leaked in February 2007. By the end of the year, she had her own reality show. Paris was not featured in it, and the pair no longer speak.
Keeping Up With The Kardashians first aired on the E! channel in October 2007.
Although new to the limelight, the whole family had showbiz connections reaching back years. Kim’s late father was Robert Kardashian, the lawyer who defended OJ Simpson when he was accused of murder. As the trial was televised, Robert’s face was recognisable to the whole of America.
Kim’s mum Kris’s new husband was Olympic gold medal winner Bruce Jenner, whose son Brody was already a star thanks to MTV hit The Hills, and being the boyfriend of Paris Hilton’s Simple Life co-star Nicole Richie.
Robert and Kris had four children while they were together; Kourtney, Kim, Khloe and Robert Jr. Kris had two children with Bruce, daughters Kendall and Kylie.
The whole family were totally ready for their close ups, and the show is consistently E!’s highest rating programme and about to start it’s seventh season.
There have also been hugely successful spin-offs featuring individual cast family members, including Kourtney and Khloe Take Miami, Kourtney and Kim Take New York and Khloe & Lamar.
TV viewers have seen (in excruciating detail) Kourtney giving birth, break-ups, proposals, arrests, marriages, drunken fights and Rob Jr’s girlfriend’s miscarriage. For this family, no moment is too intimate to sell to the highest bidder.
The brains behind Brand Kardashian is Kris Jenner, who manages all her children’s careers.
Yup, that’s right – she’s not actually a Kardashian herself, although recently she did change her name back, despite having divorced late ex-husband Robert years ago. Kris was bemused when current husband (of 20 years) Bruce outrageously had a problem with it, but she gave in to his wises eventually and remained a Jenner. The drama made for a great episode, of course.
Other Keeping Up With The Kardashians “highlights” have included Kim getting an X-ray of her famous bottom to prove there are no implants in it, Kris wetting herself (just before becoming a spokeswoman for a brand of incontinence pads aimed at women of a certain age with bladder issues) and 15-year-old Kendall’s decision to go on the pill.
Kris has also spiked her husband’s coffee with Viagra – with hilarious results, obviously, because her son Robert ended up “accidentally” drinking it.
One whole episode focused on Khloe preparing for her sport star husband Lamar Odom coming home from a long trip away, and featured sister Kourtney giving her a bikini wax that left her with third degree burns. As previously stated, NOTHING is off limits.
Kim’s sister Kourtney’s boyfriend (and babydaddy) Scott Disick has alcohol and anger issues, and his often-violent outbursts are always captured for the show in glorious technicolour. As were the counselling sessions they attended to try and repair their relationship.
Younger sister Khloe is having problems conceiving with her husband, and their attempts to start a family feature in such detail that the whole of America basically knows when her period is due.
Brother Rob is currently a contestant on America’s version of Strictly, Dancing With The Stars – and the reality behind him appearing on that reality show is obviously being filmed for his family’s reality show too.
Television has literally eaten itself, and audiences all around the world just can’t get enough.
Kim Kardashian was 2010’s highest paid reality star in the world. Thanks to her ludicrous marriage, her chances of topping the chart in 2011 have never looked better.
Don’t worry though – obviously she made Kris Humphries sign a pre-nup.
