Gaddafi Fate Worse Than Saddam Hussein

Western intervention in overthrowing a dictator not only be witnessed through the death of the former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi. Earlier in Iraq, the West has also been dropped Saddam Hussein. Iraqi president was arrested for later hanged on charges of ordering mass killings in Dujail, a city with a Shiite Muslim majority.

Arrest of Gaddafi in Libya and Saddam in Iraq is also not much different. After falling from power, two authoritarian leaders were hunted until captured or killed. However, in comparison, the fate of Gaddafi seems to be worse than Saddam.

Unlike Saddam, Khadafi directly killed in the attack site at Sirte. Video footage that aired Al-Jazeera even led to speculation that Gaddafi first tortured before being killed.

The video showed Gaddafi was dragged while still alive with a number of injuries by the revolutionary army. While Saddam was captured by U.S. forces alive, though later the court ruled him hanged.

Although eventually both were killed, Saddam also arguably more 'fortunate' than Gaddafi. Lengthy legal process to make Saddam was still able to breathe more than three years after his arrest, in December 2003. He had died of hanging in November 2006.

Gaddafi's death adds to a long list of deaths of leaders of the Arab world, which according to Western, antidemocratic and human rights violators. In fact, in his press conference, U.S. President Barack Obama commemorates the leaders of other dictators in the Middle East to be cautious.

"Throughout the Arab world, citizens have struggled to claim their rights. The young man was delivering a power to reprimand dictatorship. And the leaders who choose to resist their fate will not succeed," Obama said, as quoted by AFP on Thursday (20/10). detiknews.com
