Western air strikes violate Libya`s sovereignty

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Theo L Sambuaga, a Golkar party politician, condemned the Coalition`s air strikes against Libya, considering the attacks a blatant violation of the country`s sovereignty.

"The military action is a violation of Libya`s national sovereignty, and whatever excuses are unacceptable," Theo, deputy chairman of the Golkar Party Executive Board, said here Tuesday.

Theo, former president of The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU)`s Political and Disarmament Commission. however, also urged Moammer Ghadafi to stop killing his own people and start dialogs with the opposition leaders, and to meet the people`s demands which have been expressed.

"I ask the UN Security Council to pressure the Coalition to stop the military strikes," he said.

Theo was of the view that even if an intervention is needed against Libya, the UN is the one that should carry it out.

"For instance by immediately forming a multinational force to enter Libya and control the situation and security there," They Sambuaga said.

Earlier, Foreign Affairs Minister Marty Natalegawa expressed concern over the violence in Libya - both the attacks by Gaddafi forces against the local people and the air assaults by coalition aircraft to implement the UN`s no fly zone resolution.

"I am concerned that the situation in Libya has led to a justification of violence as a tool to solve the problem there," Marty said here on Tuesday.

He said, in the end, the conflict in Libya should be resolved through political dialogue. "Looking at the violence there, it is hard to imagine that there will be conditions suitable to conduct such a dialogue," he said.

The minister called on the coalition forces, in executing its mandate from the UN Security Council, to make civilians` security in Libya their top priority.
