Indonesia Returns Containers of Illegal Fish

VIVAnews - Indonesia will send back 200 containers full of assorted fishes that have been illegally imported to the country.

"They will be turned in to their home countries. [Most of the fishes] are mostly from China," said Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Fadel Muhammad, today, March 22.

The illegal fishes worth hundreds of millions of rupiah may weaken national fish prices because they are offered at lower prices.

"Take mackerel for instance. [Fish sellers] release the fishes by between Rp 4,000 and Rp 5,000. On the other hand, fishermen tag those fishes at around Rp 14,000 - Rp 15,000 per kilogram. How can there be competition at quite a price?" said Fadel.

The government has set up a black list of importers doing illicit businesses.
