Jakarta's Land to Subside 6.6 M by 2030

VIVAnews - Land Subsidence in Jakarta will be taking place for the next 15 years despite discontinuation of ground water suction. As a result, Jakarta will have 6.6 meters of subsidence by 2030, according to data from the Jakarta Coastal Defence Strategy (JCDS).

Between 1974 and 2010, land surface has degraded by 4.1 meters in Muara Baru, Cilincing, North Jakarta. On the other hand, West Cengkareng's area has levelled off 2.5 meters; Daan Mogot, 1.97 meters; Ancol, 1.88 meters; Cempaka Mas, 1.5 meters, Cikini, 0.80 meters and Cibubur, 0.25 meters.

The research which was jointly organized by JCDS and Miami University found that land subsidence occurs in several cities in Java such as Bandung, Cirebon, Cikarang, Semarang, and Sidoarjo.

The mapping and clearing of Jakarta coasts attempted by the Jakarta Coastal Defense Strategy will be a reference for developing giant sea walls as part of a plan to handle waterflooding.
