High-Level Alert Remains on Mount Semeru

VIVAnews – The Indonesian authorities maintained the alert status of Mount Semeru at level 3 (Watch), after the 3,676-meter volcano showed signs of increased activity over the past few days.

According to Agus Budianto, Head of Mount Semeru’s Emergency Response Team, Mount Semeru has been constantly active throughout the weekend. “Its eruption level has also increased,” he told VIVAnews on Saturday, March 14.


On Friday, March 13, the volcano erupted again, sending ash showers on five nearby districts, namely Candipuro, Pronojiwo, Pasrujambe, Senduro, and Pasirian.

Up untill now, no evacuation order had been issued by the local volcanology agency. The volcanologists told the people to stay but be prepared to leave home at short notice.

The highest volcano on Java, which is located in Lumajang, East Java, has been constantly showing sign of eruption since March 6, when the alert status on the volcano was raised to level 3.
